2021.12.04 04:47 byebyebyebesh I want to get more serious about weight lifting and improving my cardio, but I’m unsure how. Plus anxiety prevents me from being comfortable going to the gym.
As far as cardio goes, I guess I’ll just keep running and try to go longer distances faster.
Weights is what I’m stuck on. I’m extremely anxious going to the free weights section. I know that “literally nobody cares what I’m doing” but it’s still very nerve wracking, and I tend to just use the weight machines as a compromise. I don’t know if this is as effective.
I wish I had someone to go with that knew what to do, or that those fitness videos on YouTube weren’t so overwhelming.
Is there any simple way of explaining what I should do? If feel like combatting the anxiety might just be the hardest part of this experience.
If anyone elsewhere is willing to share has had a similar experience I would really appreciate hearing about it… I’m trying not to feel hopeless.

2021.12.04 04:47 surprisedropbears RULE 8: Tell the truth - or, at least, don't lie & COVID misinformation on Australian 'internment camps'
So we have a rather contentious front page post right now on the horrors of Australia's internment/concentration camps.
What has Australia come to? Are we a Nazi fascist state now?
The reality is that it's a bunch of misinformation and lies surrounding a policy (quarantining) that is reasonable seen as a contentious issue - i.e. an appropriate, scientifically backed and temporary measure to a global pandemic versus a tyrannical / authoritarian infringement of rights and use of government power on the other.
Both views have merit - lies and disinformation do not.
Let's break it down and see where the truth is and where the lies are.
In Australia when you are travelling internationally domestically between states/territories from areas that currently seeing a high rate of COVID cases or transmission you are required to either self-isolate on arrival or enter quarantine.
In addition, if you have COVID-19 or are a close contact of someone with COVID-19, you are also required to self-isolate for a period of 2 weeks (generally) and will be required to regularly test for COVID. Once the 2 weeks have passed or you are no longer COVID positive, you can leave self-isolation.
You are allowed to self-isolate at home. There are a whole bunch of government services & support to help you do so - helping with food delivery, medical care and so on. Unfortunately if you live with other people, they will have to self-isolate for the period too. Which is why you may choose to self-isolate in a quarantine facility. If your employment is impacted by having to self-isolate - you can receive disaster payments that are generous and should cover all expenses.
If you cannot safety or easily self isolate at home you can voluntarily enter into a quarantine facility for that 2 week period. For the most part through Australia, this entails staying in a government contracted hotel. Almost every Aussie knows someone who has had to go into quarantine or self-isolation at some point. While it isn't fun, it's not a punishment nor is it prison - you have free access to the internet, your phone, face time, streaming services, your possessions and so on.
If you refuse to self-isolate or if you breach health orders, you may lose the choice to be able to self-isolate and instead will be required to stay in a quarantine facility for that period of 2 weeks. This is typically not done, the typical punishment is a fine - however in some specific cases it will happen. Again, in most cases - this involves staying in a hotel, but in this specific case it looks like the Howard Springs quarantine facility in the Northern territory.
To sum it up:
Self-isolation: you can be directed to self-isolate in a residential property of your choosing if you're a traveler (and it's reasonable for you to self-isolate yourself); if you are COVID positive or a close contact of someone is COVID positive.
Quarantine: primarily used for returning internationally travelers or for domestic travelers if leaving a COVID 'hotspot'. Involves a 2 week period in a government contracted hotel or, if you live in the Northern Territory, the Howard Springs quarantine facility (NT is in the far North, what many think of the Australian 'outback' and has much less infrastructure).
You may also be required to enter into a quarantine facility if you choose to breach health orders - specifically those to self-isolate - and recklessly put the community at risk. However, most people are fined and then again ordered to self-isolate. Even when specific individuals have sparked off massive new clusters and outbreaks, they tend to only receive a fine and be ordered to self-isolate.
1 ) "Hidden camera footage of internment camps in Australia"
To start. This is a blatant lie and misinformation. This isn't prison or goal, this is a quarantine facility. The camera footage is not hidden - because you are entirely entitled possess your phone, laptop, have an internet connection and to film your experience over quarantine.
Many people who have had to quarantine have spent much of their time on the internet, face timing friends and family and video-blogging their experiences.
This isn't a 'look into the covered up internment camps' this a blatant lie.
2) Why is this person in quarantine rather than having to self-isolate?
Let's take it from the words of Hayley Hodgson herself, as she delves into in this interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGFdWcJU7-0&t=216s.
a) She was a close-contact of someone who was COVID positive in the Northern Territory (I'll delve into the NT context shortly).
b) She was identified through standard contact tracing which we have been doing all pandemic in Australia. The goal of which isn't to hunt people down - it's to identify people who have had direct exposure to COVID-19 so that they can get tested and self isolate and to attempt to trace outbreaks to their origin. Which is an incredibly important aspect in any outbreak of a highly transmissible illness. It's especially important for Australia as an island nation with many regional communities - health authorities need to know how COVID-19 is entering Australia or specific communities (especially regional ones).
c) She lied to contact tracers. After being identified as being a close contact, she was asked by contact tracers where she had been and if she had been tested. She lied to them stating that she had been tested, when she had not been. From her interview, it appears that she knew that her co-worker was COVID-positive and yet she stayed out in the community, continuing life as normal. She was additionally someone who had just moved up from Melbourne - which is currently still in lockdown as it is the centerpoint of the COVID outbreak in Australia right now.
d) The contact tracers accepted her side of events, would have given her a direction to self-isolate and would have left her alone at that point. However, they did attempt to verify that she had been tested - and they discovered that she had indeed lied.
Not only had she been intentionally putting a really vulnerable local community at risk - but she also completely undermined the public health response in the Northern territory which is currently trying to avoid a potentially crippling outbreak.
e) After discovering she had lied and had breached health orders (being a close contact, you know full well over the last 2 years that you need to self isolate) - she was ordered to enter quarantine in the Howard Springs facility. The vast majority of people are ordered to self-isolate, but lying to contact tracers like that and due to the specific circumstances in the Northern territory are the reasons why this would have happened.
3 ) This woman claims to have a mask exemption for medical issues. This is likely another lie. There are a very limited set of circumstances that would allow you to be granted one - but the vast majority of people who claim to have an exemption are more likely than not instead COVID deniers and liars.
If she had a real exemption - she would have provided that to the people managing the facility and they wouldn't be telling her she had to wear one. An exemption due to a medical condition or disability is allowed under human rights laws, and I note she didn't provide a reason as to why in her 20 minute interview. Her response to being told in that moment she had to wear a mask to do her laundry was "righto" instead of "I have a medical condition and exemption". She further, in this video and in her interview, starts asking about the arbitrary rules of the facility when she just spent 2 weeks in that same facility not a month earlier, as she had only recently moved up to the NT.
What this says is that this woman
a ) Put her community at risk by breaching health orders by going about her business as normal
b ) Lied to contract tracers, further putting her community at risk and undermining the ability of health authorities to control outbreaks
c ) Continues to lie & to breach health orders EVEN WHILE IN QUARANTINE by refusing to wear a mask. She had been in that facility for two weeks only a month or so ago - she 100% would have known the rules and requirements and if she had an exemption for a mask, they would know that too.
The Northern Territory is a territory (not a state, but quite similar) in the north of Australia. It's a picturesque region, which many of you might think of when you picture the Aussie outback.
However, it's also incredibly isolated - with a population of only 246,000 people. It's far less developed and less wealthy than the rest of Australia - and as a result has very limited public and health infrastructure to deal with a massive COVID outbreak.
The Northern Territory also has the highest proportion of Aboriginal or Indigenous Australians in Australia - with some 30% of it's population being Indigenous. Aboriginal Australians, especially those in highly remote areas, often deal with highly disproportionate prevalences of health issues that leave them far more vulnerable to COVID-19.
As a consequence the Northern Territory has had fairly strict restrictions on people entering the territory over this entire pandemic.
And guess what? It has been wildy successful - the Northern territory has only had 293 TOTAL covid cases from a national total of over 213,000 cases.
They have around 1% of Australia's total population but only ~0.13% of total Australian covid cases. It was only until this last week that they had their first death from this global pandemic - an Indigenous woman in a remote community.
The Northern Territory has been on heightened alert with Delta and now Omnicron - and they do not look kindly on people who lie to contact tracers, breach health orders and put the community at risk, or attempt to flee from quarantine.
If COVID gets out into remote and regional communities, especially Indigenous ones, it will rip through those vulnerable populations and the NT doesn't frankly have the resources to respond to that.
But they aren't arbitrary and they aren't cruel. This woman was allowed to move up to the Northern Territory from Melbourne (which is the epicenter of corona in Australia right now) as long as she complied with the quarantine rules. I'm frankly surprised they approved it - but hey, this isn't meant to be a punishment or some kind of draconian control over people - it's a public health response backed by medical authorities and science.
This woman was allowed to move to NT after quarantining successfully (so she knew the Howard Springs facility, the requirements and the rules). Unlike most people in internment or concentration camps, she was then obviously allowed to live her life as usual.
Unfortunately, due to the Omnicron or Delta varient now being identified in the NT, she became a close contact of someone who was positive. This would in almost all circumstances require her to self-isolate at home / with family etc for 2 weeks.
However, it appears that she already knew that she was a close contact and went along, business as usual putting her new community at risk. She then lied to contact tracers stating that she had been tested, when she had not been.
As a result, she was ordered to enter the Howard Springs quarantine facility again. She was not fined for lying or breaching health orders to self-isolate - which she could have been. In the facility, she continued to breach mask and social distancing rules that she would have ALREADY known about. Again she could have been fined further and be required to quarantine for longer (as obviously, it puts her and others at risk of transmission within the facility) - and yet she wasn't fined, nor was she required to quarantine longer.
And then, as per the requirements she was allowed to leave quarantine after 2 weeks and after testing negative throughout.
Internment and concentration camps don't give you that many breaks for repeating lying, breaches of the law and putting your community at harm.
Quarantine facilities and public health orders to self-isolate are something that you can have an opinion about. They're a contentious policy - but widely regarded as reasonable and essential by Australians. They're also legal - constitutionally and in legislation as a product of emergency powers. They aren't unlimited however, courts have made it clear that they have to be reasonable and can't be indefinite.
Australia was really behind the rest of the developed world on vaccines due to our CONSERVATIVE Federal Government fucking up the vaccine acquisition and rollback.
Fortunately, we've only now managed to turn things around in the last 3-4 months which adult populations reaching a point where we are getting near herd immunity, and as a result - we are seeing restrictions being rolled back.
This for example, includes the ending of a 107 day lockdown in Sydney.
But quarantine requirements for international travelers from countries with significant covid outbreaks are likely to continue well into the future.

So I've been playing with my brothers friend sfor a out 2 years now. I love it. Got my own. Metal Doce, own mini. Each campaign we've done either long or short, mind you our longest is maybe 7 or 8 sessions. I've always played my characters how I've planned them in my head. Only today, was I questioned as to why I didn't attack mountain goats, as a druid I decided all animals are chaotic neutral except for semi sentient beings. Yetis, big foots, stuff of the sort. So when one of our characters, who is just a "brother" of another got yeeted from a mountain by a mountain goat, and all I did was give the goodberries and not attack said goat attacked him, did my team get pissy. Now mind you I have talk with animals and animal friendship and could have talked to the goats to see what they would want for us to pass, I was mad fu of for talking to dogs to see where their master went, which was last of th main quest. Now they all sant to kill me cause I didn't want to fu k up the goats am I bad player?
